Snow Fun for a New Year!

With the arrival of 2013, we’re ready to welcome in a great season of outdoor winter fun! Cold weather means snow, & that’s when all the fun at the Double JJ comes to life! Hitch a ride on a sled pulled by our team of dogs, take a romantic trip on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, or re-live the fun of sledding when you speed down our snow tubing hill!

Bundle up for when you hit the hill at Sundance Slopes! You’ll have a blast sliding down our 660 ft. run, & then catching the tow rope back to the top. Race your friends down the hill, form a chain, & get a running start to really pick up some speed! Make sure you don’t miss the Hot Cocoa Bar in the Warming Hut, where you can get a bottomless cup of Hot Cocoa & then get to customize it in any delicious way you would like!

There’s a couple different factors that determine the speed of snow tubing each day. Check out the chart below to get an idea of what the speed on the hill will be like on the day that you visit. You can check our most updated schedule at the Sundance Slopes Webpage. 

You may think that traveling by four-wheel drive is the best way to get around in the snow, it’s only because you’ve never traveled by Dog Sled! Our team of eager sled dogs will pull you on a whirl-wind ride around the rolling acres of the snow-covered Thoroughbred Golf Course for a trip you won’t soon forget! If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even sign up for Mushing Lessons to learn how to drive the team of dogs yourself! Looking for a more laid-back or romantic way to enjoy the snowy woods of West Michigan? Bring your family aboard one of our Double JJ Sleighs, pulled by a team of draft horses. You’ll enjoy the quiet sounds of the horses as you glide through the woods, cozied up under some blankets. For a more romantic sleigh ride, book a private vis-a-vis ride for you & that special someone & enjoy the wonders of winter with no interruptions.

As always, we offer horseback trail rides year-round, although the rides may all be restricted to walking speed if the weather conditions mean going any faster would be dangerous for either the horse or rider.

Making Snow at the Double JJ!

We're so excited that we're finally getting cold enough winter weather that we can make snow for our snow tubing hill! Sundance Slopes is getting ramped up, & we should be able to announce an opening date for you soon! In the meantime, we thought we'd share some knowledge on what it takes to make the snow for the tubing hill!

We have two snow guns making snow for our hills, but they need more than just chilly weather to work properly!  First, we have to make sure that the ground is cold enough that the snow won't just melt as soon as it lands. We also need to check how humid the air is, because higher humidities make it more difficult to make snow.

Ideally, outside temperatures would be in the teens to make snow, but if the humidity is low enough, we can  make it in temperatures right around freezing as well. A handy way to check if conditions are right for making snow is to use the "100 Rule." Check both the temperature & the percent humidity, & add them together. This number needs to be less than 100 for conditions to allow us to make snow.

We've been building the snow up every night this week, and are working on grooming it into the lanes you'll be able to speed down on your snow tube as soon as Sundance Slopes is open! We should be able to make the official announcement of an opening date in the next day or two, so watch our facebook page & website for details!

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Fun for Couples or the Whole Family!

With the end of the year in sight, it’s time to decide how you’ll welcome in 2013! Electric Forest Festival Weekend at Double JJ Resort

June 28-July 1, 2012

The Double JJ Resort will remain open for visitors during the Electric Forest Festival, and will be offering limited activities at the JJ Frontier, including the Gold Rush Waterpark, the Thoroughbred Golf Course, and the Sundance Steakhouse.

Traveling to the Double JJ Resort during Electric Forest Festival:
In order to avoid traffic from the festival, please plan to approach the resort from the north. Take exit 140 off of US-31 for Stony Lake Road and turn east on Stony Lake. Take the first right onto 68th Avenue and follow it for almost two miles before turning right onto Water Road. Drive a half-mile south on Water Road, and the entrance to the Double JJ Resort will be on your left.

The Gold Rush Waterpark will be open Thursday through Sunday, with special festival hours of 11am-7pm. A free shuttle will run from the festival grounds to the Gold Rush Waterpark during hours of operation. Day passes to the Gold Rush Waterpark will be sold at a discounted rate of $20 each during festival.

The Thoroughbred Golf Club will remain open throughout the Electric Forest Festival as well. They'll be running a special rate of two for $69 for the length of festival, which includes 18 holes of golf for two people, along with use of a golf cart.

Stop by Sundance Steakhouse Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night from 5pm-10pm for a chance to try one of their delicious steaks. Friday night they will offer All-You-Can-Eat Ribs, and Saturday is Prime Rib night! The Steakhouse is located near the Gold Rush Waterpark at the JJ Frontier, and may also be accessed by a free shuttle from the festival grounds.
